Bored piles are considered an economic solution of deep foundations. However, precautionary measures have to be taken when they are employed in soft soils. The case study is describing challenges any contractor may encounter during the installation of such pile type in soft soils.

This presentation will highlight the main challenges related to tunneling in challenging subground conditions. It will also showcase how the finite element method (FEM) can be used as powerful design tool in complicated geotechnical conditions to verify both stability as well as serviceability requirements. The case histories will cover TBM and NATM tunnel techniques in soil as well as in rock formations.
