This presentation will highlight the main challenges related to tunneling in challenging subground conditions. It will also showcase how the finite element method (FEM) can be used as powerful design tool in complicated geotechnical conditions to verify both stability as well as serviceability requirements. The case histories will cover TBM and NATM tunnel techniques in soil as well as in rock formations.
